AFA Scheduling Committee & Scheduling-Related Contract Sections
Announcing the AFA Scheduling Committee
A number of flight attendants contacted our local leadership to discuss scheduling issues. As Avelo used to have an inflight committee, we thought it would be a good idea to reestablish that committee. Avelo management agreed with our assessment and began reconstituting that committee. In the interim, it became clear that the reconstituted committee wouldn’t work now that we have a legal bargaining representative. AFA asked management to stop putting together the committee and they agreed.
But we still need a voice when addressing scheduling issues with management and that is why we are creating an AFA Scheduling Committee. Ideally, the committee would be comprised of one person per base. If you are interested in joining the committee, please email Selina at [email protected] no later than Monday, October 9th.
Scheduling-Related Sections of our Future Contract
These sections rank up there with compensation as some of the most important – and referenced – sections of our contract.
Section 5. Hours of Service
This section will include our maximum duty hours, minimum rest times, check in/check out procedures and minimum days off.
Section 6. Scheduling
All of the scheduling issues, except for those covered in Hours of Service and Reserve, will be included in this section. This includes rules for trip and line construction, bidding rules, adjusting your schedule (trades, drops and pick ups), changes to trips, dealing with FCS, deadheading, month to month transition, and order of assignment (of uncovered flying).
Also included in this section is the ability of the AFA Scheduling Committee to have access to the software and deal with the company regarding scheduling issues, including the construction of trips and lines. All AFA represented airlines have this important committee.
Section 7. Reserve
There is always a need for on-call flight attendants to work the uncovered trips, and replace flight attendants who are unable to make their flights (whether stuck on a plane somewhere else, calling in sick or being out on a leave of absence). Being on reserve doesn’t have to be as bad as it is today. AFA has been very successful in eliminating 24-hour reserve in flight attendant contracts. Few contracts still contain 24-hour reserve periods. As such, eliminating it at Avelo is one of our top priorities in this section. It certainly isn’t necessary at an airline without overnights. There aren’t even employees in FCS overnight! Although management is working on changing this.
AFA’s first Section 7. Reserve proposal was made last month and we are hopeful that management will make a counter proposal at our next session in October.
